Traditional transfer printing applies a print pattern from one substrate, typically paper, to synthetic fabrics by applying heat and pressure. Cool transfer printing is a newer process that transfers a design from paper to fabric without the use of heat. Due to high market interest, cool transfer printing technology has evolved to achieve high-quality digital printing on cotton fabrics.
Cool transfer printing has many advantages. The process does not require any heat to transfer the design to the fabric and also uses less water, dye, and energy, proving to be an environmentally-friendly alternative to other printing methods. The speeds are comparable to rotary screen printing, reaching up to 40 yards per minute. Cool transfer printing makes it possible to achieve high quality, photo-realistic images to be printed on fabric while still maintaining cotton’s soft handfeel. New updates to this process have allowed designs to be printed on both sides of the fabric during a single pass by using a duplex printing machine.
Since cool transfer printing is new compared to other traditional printing methods, the cost and performance are roadblocks to widespread industry adoption. There are also certain finishes and effects that are not possible with this technology, such as glitter or other raised surface special effects. However, the production speeds, limited WEC footprint, strong colorfastness, and print quality make cool transfer printing an attractive option.
